  • Doxycycline Monohydrate Description

Doxycycline is a powerful antibiotic used for treating numerous infective diseases in pets. It works by inhibiting the ability of the bacteria to grow and multiplym by interfering with their protein-building mechanism.

Doxycycline can be used for treating leptospirosis and toxoplasmosis in cats. Mycoplasma and psittacosis infections in animals can also be treated well by using this medication. Veterinary physicians also prescribe this medicine to pets who suffer from tick borne diseases like Lyme disease or Rocky Mountain spotted fever.

The usual dose of this drug for treating bacterial infections in cats is 2 mg per pound of body weight, to be given twice a day. The doses should be given to the animal on a full tummy, after a meal, in order to limit the gastrointestinal side effects. While this dosage is fairly standard, it is advisable to consult a veterinarian before pet owners start giving it to their cats.

As with most antibiotics, this medication can cause some side effects like diarrhea, nausea, severe headaches, dizziness, rash on the skin and vomiting. Serious adverse effects like fever, lethargy, hair loss, little or dark urine, jaundice and weakness may also occur. Allergic reactions to this medication are possible. Hence, animals that have previously had a hypersensitive reaction to any other antibiotic in the tetracycline family should not be treated with this medicine.

The tablet form of this drug is known to get stuck in cats' throats, resulting in potential damage to their esophagus. Hence, it is necessary to provide plenty of fresh water to the cat after administration of this medication.

Doxycycline can interact with some other drugs, including anti-clotting medications, antacids, barbiturates and insulin. Hence, pet owners are advised to avoid giving these drugs to the cat while it is under treatment with Doxycycline.

Pet owners should store this medicine in a cool and dry place. It should never be kept in a place that can be easily reached by children. It should be discarded in an appropriate manner when it is no longer needed or after its expiry date is over.
